The vacations are approaching and you're already imagining
yourself on the beaches of Tenerife or on the slopes of the
Teide volcano, galloping along with your hair blowing in
the wind. This dream scenario is perfectly feasible! Horseback
riding in Tenerife is one of the most popular activities.
The island is dotted with a number of equestrian centers
offering hourly, half-day and full-day rides. Some schools
also offer riding lessons. Let's go on a horseback riding trip to Tenerife!

What are the conditions
for riding in Tenerife?

There are no special requirements for trail riding, apart from
probably not being afraid of the animal's size and power.
Touring horses are used to carrying amateur riders on their
backs, and your instructor will always select the horse best
suited to your level. However, there are a few basic rules:

  • There's no age limit for riding. However, children under the
age of 6 are generally not allowed to ride alone,
    except for pony rides.
  • A minimum level of physical fitness is essential. If in doubt,
it's best to ask your instructor for advice.
  • For safety's sake, it's very important to pay close attention to
your riding guide's instructions. He knows the terrain as well
as the animal. Trusting him is the guarantee of a great ride.
  • For the well-being of your horse and the pleasure of your ride,
make sure you remain calm both around the horse and in the saddle.

What equipment is required for horseback riding in Tenerife?

You're not signing up to take part in a horse show, so forget about protocol. Simple, comfortable clothes will do just fine.

What should you wear for a horseback ride?

  • A bomb: this is an approved helmet for riders. It is usually supplied by the riding school.
  • Closed shoes with non-slip soles and low heels. These prevent your feet from slipping into the stirrup. No flip-flops or sandals.
  • Long pants. They prevent chafing and scratches, which can be extremely unpleasant and spoil the ride.
  • Sunglasses, gloves, sunscreen and a small bottle of water ensure optimum comfort.
