What equipment do you need for hiking in Tenerife?

Before embarking on the ascent of Tenerife's volcanic mountains, it's important to prepare functional equipment. For hiking on the beautiful island, you will need:

- Good hiking shoes: sturdy and preferably high-cut to provide good ankle support;

- Waterproof windbreaker: remember that it's often cooler and windier at higher altitudes. Some areas of Tenerife, particularly the north, can be rainier;

- A cap and sunglasses: to protect yourself from the sun, along with sunscreen;

- Lightweight clothing: short or long-sleeved tops depending on the season, shorts, capris, or sport pants for basic island hikes;

- Appropriate clothing for ascending Mount Teide: depending on the season and the type of hike you plan to do, you may need warm clothing such as a down jacket, gloves, a hat, and ski goggles, for example.

What are the best walks in Tenerife?

Waterfall hikes in Tenerife

You can't visit an island without seeing waterfalls! In Tenerife, nature offers visitors a host of beautiful waterfalls to discover during their hikes. We've selected the best places where you'll find beautiful waterfalls just like in the movies:
Lomo Morín Waterfall

Lomo Morín Waterfall

Near Los Silos, in the north of Tenerife, the Lomo Morín waterfall is not natural, but it does have its charm. To discover it, you'll have to take a trail that's accessible to the whole family. The route is only 4 km long, and you'll be able to appreciate the surprising views over this rather wild part of the island. Care must be taken when swimming, as the ground is slippery. So don't take any unnecessary risks, especially if you're going with your children.
Barranco del infierno

Barranco del infierno

The Ravin de l'enfer (Barranco del infierno) near Adeje appeals to hikers in search of beauty. Here you'll discover the island's largest waterfall, 200 metres high, which cascades over the riverbed before joining the ocean a few metres below. You won't be able to swim here, as the flora and fauna are fragile and well-preserved.

To take part in this beautiful hike, it's advisable to reserve your place in advance. It costs 11 euros for a non-resident adult and 5.50 euros for a child aged 5 to 12. Don't forget to be well equipped, especially with good walking shoes. The paths are steep and the stony ground can be very slippery. Allow around three hours for this medium-difficulty hike. The starting point is Calle de los molinos, Adeje.
Chindia Waterfall - Tijoco Alto

Chindia Waterfall - Tijoco Alto

Located in the south of the island at Tijoco Alto, the Chindia man-made waterfall appears after a 6 km climb. The hike is fairly moderate, but you'll need to be used to walking on slippery terrain. As a reward, how about a swim under the waterfalls?

Teide hikes

Teide hikes

With its 19,000 hectares, Teide National Park is packed with signposted hiking trails. You'll be spoilt for choice. That said, some hikes require a good level of fitness and full equipment.

If you're looking for a hike that's unique in the world: climb to the Teide crater. Permission must first be obtained. Start at the top station of the cable car, following the route to the La Fortaleza viewpoint. Then take the left-hand path for the ascent. Beware: you'll need to be used to hiking at high altitude, as the stratovolcano's highest point is almost 4,000 metres above sea level. It's a good idea to make stops in stages, as the smell of sulfur and the changing climate could make it difficult to progress on the hike. You can make the ascent day or night, with or without a guide - the choice is yours.
Barranco de Masca

Barranco de Masca

Head for Buenavista del Norte, in a small hamlet called Masca. To get there, a steep road will give you the shivers. But wait until you see the Barranco de Masca, otherwise known as the ravine. This is surely the most unusual spot on the island. It offers numerous vantage points that are both wild and heavenly. It's the perfect place to take your best vacation photos!

To get down there, you'll need to reserve your place in advance, as access is regulated, and you'll need good walking shoes. A 620-metre gradient takes you straight down to a black-sand cove, facing the cliff of the giants: Los Gigantes. On this surprising hike, you'll discover a wealth of flora and fauna, with waterfalls, a river, steep cliffs and the sea as your reward. You can return by boat or climb up the ravine for the more athletic.
Anaga Park

Anaga Park

A change of scenery: Anaga Park, located on the northeastern tip of the island, was classified as a biosphere reserve in 2015 by Unesco. So much so that biodiversity is present and hiking is a real domestic resource. Several hiking trails are signposted and accessible from the road. From the Anaga lighthouse to the Camino de Los Sentidos, via the wild Taganana coast, this 14,500-hectare expanse offers nature at its most beautiful.

The peaks can reach up to 1,000 metres in altitude. All along the way, you'll discover forests with the humid subtropical vegetation typical of Macaronesia. And if you want to extend your hike, you can stay at the Anaga hostel, 2.2 km from El Montillo Nature Park. Simple rooms await you for a restful night in the heart of nature.
Afur - Taganana hike

Afur - Taganana hike

At Anaga Rural Park, another hike with a waterfall awaits you. To get to the Barranco de Afur, you'll leave from the town of Afur and follow a 9 km trail with a fair amount of ascent and descent. A loop takes you from Afur to Taganana. At the end of the trail is the waterfall, and the steep path takes you to the magnificent wild beach of Tamadite. Beware, though, that you can't swim here, as it's in its raw state and therefore dangerous. But enjoy the peaceful paradise setting before heading back to Taganana.

This magnificent, medium-difficulty hike is 14.7 kilometers long. Allow around 6 hours for the walk, not including a break on Tamadite beach. A great day out on Tenerife! Don't forget to bring something to eat and drink - you'll need it.
Teno rural park

Teno rural park

In the north-west of the island, near Masca, the Teno Rural Park is the perfect place for hiking enthusiasts. It's one of Tenerife's most emblematic natural areas. Walk through the Monteverde laurel forest and fill your lungs with oxygen. Everywhere, lush vegetation will open up before you and it will be an incredible experience. Don't hesitate to explore the area with a local guide to avoid getting lost.

In fact, the nature reserve is surrounded by hamlets where farming and animal husbandry are the main activities. These villages are well worth a visit. You can stop off at :

  • Masca
  • Las Lagunetas
  • El Palmar
  • Teno Alto
  • Los Carrizales
  • Erjos
  • Los Portelas, where the Bolico hostel awaits you.

In short, the Teno Rural Park in Tenerife offers over a hundred kilometers of hiking trails. Between the cliffs and the sea, you'll be spoilt for choice!
Punta de Teno

Punta de Teno

Part of the nature reserve of the same name, Punta de Teno is Tenerife's most westerly point, located 9 km from Buenavista del Norte. Thanks to its privileged position and altitude of 1,300 meters, it enjoys the best possible sunshine on the island. At the top of the mountain, you'll discover a lighthouse that watches over the land and guides sailors. From here, you'll have a splendid view of the famous Los Gigantes cliffs that set the scene for Tenerife's north coast, as well as the neighboring islands of La Goméra and La Palma.

Hikers will appreciate the many footpaths leading to the Teno lighthouse, such as the Risco trail via the PR-TF 58 road from Los Bailaderos. This hike takes around 6 hours.
Los Gigantes hike

Los Gigantes hike

The end of the world is within reach at Los Gigantes! The object of mystical belief by Tenerife's first inhabitants, Los Guanches, these Baltic cliffs are a veritable playground for hiking enthusiasts. There are several trails to Los Gigantes. The Ravin de l'Enfer (Hell Ravine) at Masca is one of the best known, but requires prior booking, as access is restricted. It is not suitable for very young children or people with mobility problems.

Other trails from Santiago del Teide are available for the discerning hiker. The paths are steep, so be well equipped and follow the signs. Water tunnels, caves, waterfalls, natural pools, belvederes, vertiginous ravines, pebble and black sand beaches... That's all you'll see on your way to this historic part of the island.
Vilaflor hike

Vilaflor hike

To the south of the Teide National Park, Vilaflor is a great place for hiking. This rural municipality on Tenerife is located in the middle of the mountains at an altitude of 1,500 metres. Among the fields and pine forests, you'll discover legendary trees such as the Pino Gordo, with its 9-metre circumference, and the 56-metre-high Pino de las dos Pernadas.

There are several hiking trails to choose from:

  • Lunar Landscape PR TF-72: from the village, head into the pine forest as far as the watchtower. You'll find a landscape from outer space that's a complete change of scenery.
  • Sombrerito de Chasna: to the north of the village, take the path bordering Teide Park.
  • The Anaga - Chasna GR 131 nature trail: from La Esperanza to Arona.
  • The Pino Enano trail: or in other words, the viewpoint trail, for unforgettable landscapes.
